Pasadena Youth Center will host the 2009 Adelante Mujer Latina Conference on Saturday, April 25 at Pasadena City College, announced Stella Murga, the nonprofit center's executive director. "This nationally recognized annual conference has made a positive difference for thousands of Latinas between the ages of 12 and 20," said Murga.
The annual conference was first held 15 years ago. Last year the conference drew more than 1,400 students from approximately 300 Los Angeles County schools. Many of the students were accompanied by their mothers. "A special aspect of this conference is the emphasis we place on inviting the mothers of these young women to join their daughters at the conference," said Murga. "This engages the family in preparing for the future," she added.
The goal of the daylong conference is to provide young Latinas the opportunity to obtain information about college and careers. "What we're trying to do is reach students early to tell them to prepare for college - take the right high school courses, investigate financial aid opportunities and, in general, start taking the right steps toward a productive future," said Murga. At the conference young Latinas interact with successful professional women from a number of fields, including academia, law, engineering, business and government. "They become role models for the young women who attend and participate in the conference," said Murga.
